I Caught Santa! Review and FREE code so you can catch Santa, too! (ends 12/10)

Ah, Christmas. That magical time of year when there’s never enough time or money or AA batteries (not included). The one time of year you can bribe your kids to be extra good with the promise of Santa’s rewards. (And no, I'm totally not above bribing my kids - use what you've got!) But what if your kids are starting to doubt your stories of a strange man who directs flying deer to your house so he can drop down your chimney, eat all your cookies, drink all your milk, and leave some toys under the tree before heading on to the next houseful of good and obedient children? Well, then, you just have to come up with creative ways to prove Santa’s existence to them.

Santa 2

Sure, you can have dad or grandpa dress up as Santa and let the kids “catch” him. Odds are that won’t fool them, though, and besides, do you have any idea how expensive it is to rent a Santa costume? Besides, there’s an easier way! And best of all, it’s completely FREE until December 10th! (And keep reading to find out how you can enter to win an iPad Air!)

Santa 6

Santa kind of looks like he's peeking down my sister's shirt here...[/caption] When I first heard about, I’ll admit that I really wasn’t sure I’d like the results. I’m somewhat less than Photoshop-savvy, and it seemed like it’d be way too obvious that Santa was an add-on because the image wouldn’t blend in with my own picture. But I was very pleasantly surprised with what I came up with! (So much so that instead of doing just one picture, I wound up looking for more pictures and hanging out on the site for a while putting Santa in all of them).

Santa 1 is a great way to add a little Christmas spirit back into your kids’ Grinchy little hearts. You can add Santa (or Rudolph, or both of ‘em) into any of your pictures and make it look like Santa’s just chilling at your house. And they’re offering you the chance to try it out for FREE using promo code #SantaShare through December 10th! They’re also offering a Customer Appreciation Contest with over $1,500 in prizes! Top prize is an iPad Air with Retina Display worth $649, with ten other prizes for ten other winners. Make sure you get your entries in for this great contest before December 30th! To enter, just go to and scroll down to the Rafflecopter widget on their page.

Santa 4 is really easy to use, and very cleverly designed. Once go to the site, you just click the green ornament that says “Click Here to Get Started.” Pick a picture to upload, type in your email address and name, and start having fun! There are 20 different Santa (and Rudolph) poses you can pick from – Surprised Santa, Sleeping Santa, Santa coming down the chimney, Santa getting a kiss from Mommy, and many more. You can zoom in and out on both your picture and on Santa to get the sizing right, and move Santa to wherever you want him in the frame. I was really happy to see that you can also adjust Santa’s color and brightness levels to make him look like he was in the picture all along! There are also several borders to choose from if you want to add one to your creation.

Santa 3

At the checkout page, you can download your free photo and share it via Facebook, Twitter, Pinterest, or email. You’ll see a lot of other options they offer, and other characters you can “catch” in a photo - the Easter Bunny, the Tooth Fairy, and Cupid. You’ll also see the option to make a video with your picture as the background! The Elf-Cam is a pretty neat little toy to play with too. You can see your video for free, and it’s only $4.99 with a photo purchase to buy the un-watermarked version. To see an example, here’s Santa hanging out by the Christmas stockings. So head on over and check it out – it’s free, so you have nothing to lose, and maybe a little Christmas magic to gain!

NeoCell "Healthy New You for 2014" Giveaway (ends 12/16)

I have to admit, I'm a little jealous. When I gave birth to my youngest son back in March, I had a full head of thick shiny dark brown hair. 8 months later, well... it's still dark brown. I know, I know, your hair is thicker during pregnancy and the extra thickness goes away after the baby is born. But I swear I had more hair than this before Captain Fussypants came into existence! My wonderful husband swears he doesn't see a difference (and maybe he doesn't; I could probably cut my hair to shoulder length and dye it platinum blonde, and be lucky to get a "You look different today - did the baby let you get some sleep last night?" out of him).

But I see the difference, and I see the clumps of hair that are STILL coming out every time I wash it or brush it. The lucky lady in charge of Life in a House of Testosterone was able to try out a Keratin Hair Volumizer from NeoCell, and swears her hair hasn't been so healthy since she was a teenager! And she's giving one lucky reader a chance to win a $50 NeoCell gift certificate, which could be used towards the Hair Volumizer or any other product that the winner's heart desires. Read onward for more information about NeoCell and the giveaway, and to toss your entries into the magical hat; I know I would love to try out their products for myself!

Welcome to the NeoCell "Healthy New You for 2014" Giveaway from Life in a House of Testosterone and Mom Loves 2 Read. As part of our Holiday Gift Guide event, we are thrilled to bring you another awesome giveaway!

I had the pleasure of reviewing the Keratin Hair Volumizer and the Pomegranate from the Seed Supplement - both of which I absolutely loved. My hair has not been this full and shiny since I was in high school and I love the added boost I get from the Pomegranate supplement! You can interact socially with the great people at NeoCell on Facebook and Twitter. Nerf Cyber Hoop Review and Giveaway (ends 11/30)

Over the summer, I participated in a NERF Cyber Hoop campaign through We received a free Cyber Hoop to try out and share our opinion about. My boys loved it, and I bought a second Cyber Hoop so we could leave one at older-child height and rig up the second one at a lower height for my 8-year-old, since he loves playing with the iPhone and the Cyber Hoop, but wanted to be able to dunk like his brothers.

 NERF Cyber Hoop

And then the iPhone broke - it got dropped and despite the protective case on it, the screen shattered. Worse, I found that we didn't have a warranty on it like I thought we did. So I dug out my older Motorola phone as a backup for the kids to use, and now we are iDevice-less. No iPhone, no iPad, nothing that's compatible with the Cyber Hoop, since there's not an Android app for it.

So I'm offering to you, my readers, a brand-new, unopened Nerf CyberHoop. This includes the hoop with wireless connectivity and score-tracking paddle, ball, mobile device stand and instructions.

NERF Cyber Hoop

My boys had a lot of fun with this before the sad and violent death of the iPhone. We hung it over a door in the living room and my two older boys competed in virtual dunk contests. Each time one of the kids made a basket, the hoop would make cheering sounds for them. The app recorded their games and dunks and tracked their stats (you do have to go tell the iPhone who scored each time someone makes a basket, though). Of course they loved competing for high scores and the best stats because they’re competitive like that.

The highlight reel was a particular favorite of my 13-year-old – he would record himself doing goofy solo slam dunks (note: this toy is not designed for serious slam dunking), and then got a huge kick out of watching the playback. This is a large part of why I bought a second hoop – my 8-year-old loves recording videos (just in general – he’ll record himself drawing pictures and then watch the playback), but is too small to mimic his brother’s moves to record his own videos. My plan was to attach the 2nd hoop right to the wall at 8-year-old-height so he could slam dunk too. Oh well; he’s pretty happy recording whatever else catches his interest, especially since his brothers aren’t recording slam dunk videos anymore either.
NERF Cyber Hoop

There are five ways to play for up to four players; one of the features we didn’t get a chance to use was the option to compete with friends who aren’t in the same room in real time.

The Nerf Cyber Hoop, which is recommended for ages 8 and up, connects wirelessly to your iPhone, iPad, or iPod Touch (iPhone 4/4S/5, iPod touch 4th or 5th generation, or iPad 2/3/4). It also requires 3 AAA batteries – obviously, neither the batteries nor the iDevice are included. You’ll need to download the free NERF Cyber Hoop app from the App Store; in-app purchases are available but are not required. The app itself does not require an internet connection after it’s installed, but you won’t be able to use all of the features if you’re not connected.

The Nerf Cyber Hoop normally sells for $19.99 but is currently 25% off on Amazon, so you can get it for just $14.99 if you’d like to purchase one for yourself.

Amazon Holiday Shopping: Best Books of 2013 - Part Two

Given my afore-mentioned love of books, there were just too many great books to fit into one post. So, for my fellow book-lovers, here's another batch of great books of 2013!

Amazon Holiday Shopping: Best Books of 2013

I love to read. When I was a kid, instead of taking away TV time or grounding me to the house, I would lose my beloved books when I misbehaved, because that was what I loved the most. (Fortunately I didn't misbehave too often - and I can say that because my mom's computer is currently not working so she probably won't see this and post a comment disagreeing with me).

So today I wanted to share with you some of Amazon's Best Books of 2013. I haven't read all of the ones posted here (yet!) - despite becoming a stay-at-home mom, my reading time has been drastically reduced as of late. My Goodreads Reading Challenge for this year shows that I'm 46% (23 books) behind on reaching my goal of 52 books for the year. *sigh* (To see what I have managed to read this year, visit my Goodreads page!) However, all the books below are ones I've either read or that are on my to-read list (which is a very long list that grows longer by the day!)

Product Review from Melinda: Siliconies

I gave birth to a vampire. Or maybe a zombie. At least that's what I tell people after they see my son bite me. He started obsessively biting everything, and everyone, at about 10 months old. At first we blamed it on teething, but when he was still biting two months later, I began to look for other answers, and solutions. One piece of advice that pops up when you do an Internet search on how to stop biting, is to redirect their biting to a more appropriate object. My son wasn't a huge fan of baby teething toys, so I went looking for other options. I found Siliconies .

Siliconies are silicone jewelry pieces that are designed to be stimulating and interesting for children. They are made by Family Bedrock, a family company with two young children of their own. Nicole, the mom of Family Bedrock, says that her oldest son was always putting everything in his mouth and she wasn't able to find anything on the market that truly fit their needs, so they decided to make their own products. We have the Turtle Pendant for my son and we both love it. He loves the texture and shape. I love that it is big enough that I don't have to worry about it being a choking hazard and that I don't have to worry about my son ingesting dangerous chemicals. Because they are made of silicone, the Siliconies are FREE from BPA, PVC, Phthalates, Cadmium, Latex and Lead. The pendants also come on a cord with a break-away clasp so you don't have to worry about your little one getting injured by the cord.

I cannot recommend Siliconies enough if you have a child who likes to bite. We eventually discovered that my son's biting problem is caused by Sensory Processing Disorder, and Siliconies will be great for him for years to come as we learn to deal with that. Siliconies are great for teething babies as well as children who need the extra sensory input that they get from chewing or mouthing objects, like my son. We aren't the only family who loves them either. Their turtle and square pendants are so popular that Family Bedrock has just released a new shape, the Froggy Pendant, which is super cute and I am looking forward to getting that one for my son too.

You can find Family Bedrock at:

Doctor Who 50th Anniversary Monitor Mate
(arv $70)
Doctor Who has had a resurgence in popularity lately, gaining new fans seemingly every day. I know people who've been fans since the 80s, and I know fans who were born in the 80s (or 90s, or even after that). And with the 50th Anniversary of the show's beginning approaching, it's a great time to be a Whovian!

Doctor Who Turns 50

If you could touch the alien sand and hear the cries of strange birds,
and watch them wheel in another sky,
would that satisfy you?
~The First Doctor~
November 23, 1963 changed everything. Initially started as a family show to fill up the spots between the football results and the evening programing it was new and different. After a run of only 3 years the first Doctor William Hartnell wanted to leave the show the brilliant idea of renewing their doctors was born. In 1989 though after running for 26 years they rested the show until 1996 when they did a made a TV movie featuring the 8th Doctor. It wasn't until 2005 that the Doctor was fully regenerated and it has been nothing but up from there. Doctor Who has a huge following and Whovians every rejoice this year celebrating what Guinness Book of World Records says is the longest running and most successful sci-fi series in the world.

Amazon Holiday Shopping: 20 Stocking Stuffers under $4 for the Kidlets

Are you looking for cute but inexpensive stocking stuffers for your little ones? Melinda and I rounded up some of the deals to be found on Amazon, and are sharing them here with you. I bought the SODIAL Funky Fun Colorful Magnetic Letters for one of my boys last year, and he loved them - it's a little difficult to see in the small image below, but if you click the link you can clearly see that all the letters have little faces on them! This inspired a months-long drawing frenzy in which he captioned many of his pictures with letters with little faces on them. That's progressed to full-on letter people now.

McDonald’s Happy Meals Books & Family Reading Pack Giveaway (5 winners!)

McDonalds Books

I have an addiction. I LOVE McDonald’s McCafĂ© specialty coffee drinks – or more specifically, I love their mochas. Or as my husband calls them, “brownies in a cup.” Fresh ground espresso, chocolate syrup, steamed milk, topped with whipped cream and chocolate drizzle – what’s not to love? Admittedly a mocha isn’t the healthiest drink I could choose at McDonald’s, but I love them the way I love the occasional chocolate cupcake. I have a thing for chocolate. McDonald’s mochas are a special treat for me. When I went back to college as a “non-traditional student” (a mom of three who was working a full-time job) and made the President’s List, I treated myself to a mocha. When I got my first check from a publisher for a story I’d written – a story someone was willing to pay me real money for! – I deposited the check pretty quickly (after taking a picture of it for posterity), but kept a little cash to go through the drive-thru for a mocha on my way home. When I’m having a rough day, my husband knows that a little chocolate-caffeine fix from McDonald’s will improve my mood (smart man, that one).

But that’s not what I’m here to talk about. I’m here to talk about books!

Happy Meal books, to be exact. Through November 14th, McDonald’s is offering limited-edition books in lieu of toys in their Happy Meals! As part of their launch they’ve also joined forces with Reading is Fundamental (RIF) to provide an additional 100,000 Happy Meal books (on top of the 20 million that will be distributed in the Happy Meals) to children who may not have easy access to book. Furthermore, McDonald’s has partnered with DK Publishing to provide a different interactive e-book on their McPlay app every month through the end of 2014! The first digital book, “The World’s Greatest Cities,” introduces DK Publishing’s Amazing World Series. The Happy Meal Books, as well as the DK Publishing e-books, are available for download at
“We’re excited to invite families to spend time together and celebrate the joy of reading through these fun and original Happy Meal Books,” said Ubong Ituen, vice president of marketing for McDonald’s USA. “This is the latest step in our ongoing efforts to enrich the lives of families, and part of a broader book strategy that will combine the fun of the Happy Meal, new partners and technology to inspire more family reading time.”

McDonald’s was kind enough to send me a complimentary Family Reading Pack, including a copy of each of the four books, to review and share with my children. With their whimsical illustrations and imaginative storylines, my kids were hooked! The first one we read was “The Goat Who Ate Everything” – my kids were instantly drawn to the creative cover, which has a chunk bitten out of the corner, proving the point that this goat will eat anything and everything! But the poor goat discovers that eating everything leads to tummyaches, while eating right leaves him feeling great!

“Ant, Can’t” tells the story of Alexi Ant, who encourages physical fitness and leads the effort to save the anthill from a construction crew.

Next up was “Doddi the Dodo Goes to Orlando” – but Doddi’s journey is very roundabout (she travels from Toledo to Orlando via northern Canada, Spain, Cairo, Moscow, and many other locales). Her various stops along the way open the door to conversations with your kids about a lot of different places in the world.

My personal favorite of the four books was “Deana’s Big Dreams” – the story of a tiny dinosaur who eventually grows so big she outgrows the book!

Each book also comes with this cute little bookmark, encouraging kids to think about other books they love.

Not one, but FIVE lucky readers are going to win Family Reading Packs courtesy of McDonald’s! In addition to the four books, each winner will receive a McDonald’s blanket (seen in the background of the book pictures), a reading light, and an Arch card. Ultimate Geeky Giveaway

My husband and I recently celebrated our first wedding anniversary. Because we both have a strange sense of humor (one of the things that brought us together), I decided to buy him a t-shirt from 80's Tees for an anniversary present. This is what he wound up with:

In case you young'uns don't know, "No Ma'am" from Married with Children, a show both my husband and I enjoyed greatly when it was still on the air. I also discovered that a more apt name for their site would be "80's Tees and Other Neat Stuff," as I also found some awesome pint glasses that I HAD to have (a Paddy's Irish Pub one for him, and a Princess Bride one that warns "Contents May Contain Iocane Powder" for me).

Sadly, I didn't see the pint glasses until after I'd already placed my order. This was my first purchase with them, and I'd signed up for their newsletter to get 10% off the order. I emailed customer service to see if they'd let me add a couple of items on to the already-submitted order, and I have to say, they have GREAT customer service. Their representative emailed me back promptly and was happy to let me add on the pint glasses to my order so I could receive my 10% discount on those as well.

My husband LOVED his shirt and wears it regularly (even to his job - he works behind the scenes at a television station, so it's sort of appropriate) and we both use our new pint glasses every day.

Snorg Tees has some great items for the geek in all of us as well. My next t-shirt may very well be this one:

So try your luck, see if you'll be the lucky winner!

Don't forget to come back every day to enter for extra chances to win!
